There are so many different types of apples, but one is encouraged to not just look at the well-known names when it comes to planting or eating. The Zestar apple is actually famous in its own right and you may find it helpful to learn all about it.

This is a new apple. That is right, after the thousands and thousands of year that apples have been growing all over the world, a new apple is here, just being released in the year 1998.

It was developed to be a very hardy apple tree that is able to withstand the harsh and very cold winters that places such as the state of Minnesota receive each year. It is also an early season apple, which many gardeners love since having the Zestar apple tree and then having other trees that are mid to late bloomers can extend the harvesting period to last a long time.

The color of this fruit will depend on how much sunshine it receives. Therefore, the more sun each individual fruit has, the more red will be on the skin. The apple will be a mixture of red and cream, with a bit more cream always being on the side that was more shaded.

The Zestar apple stores rather well, lasting up to two months when it is put into a refrigeration. This apple is known for not only being beautiful but also extremely tasty with a crunchy texture. It is unique in the fact that the taste is sweet and tart at the same time and most wonderfully it has a brown sugar flavor to it which makes it very special.

This tree will bloom in early May with delightful light pink and white flowers. Those who choose to have this variety will find that they are harvesting medium sized apples that are ready for picking from late August through the beginning of September.

No one should take the Zestar apple tree for granted; it takes about thirty years for scientists to develop a new apple that is ready for gardeners to grow. The breeders at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum’s Horticultural Research Center can be given thanks for the Zesta. This is the same organization that brought us the beloved Honeycrisp apple just recently in 1991.

Interestingly, the Zestar apple tree is technically written out with an exclamation point at the end as in “Zestar!” which shows just how enthusiasts the horticultural experts were to develop this amazing tree.
